OIC Secretary-General Meets with a Number of Middle Eastern Senior Officials in New York to Discuss Peace Efforts

New York, September 19, 2023, SPA — The Secretary-General of Jeddah-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha participated today in the meeting designed to discuss peace efforts in the Middle East called for by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and held in cooperation with Jordan, Egypt, the Arab League and the European Union, on the sidelines of the meetings of the United Nations 78th General Assembly in New York.
The OIC Secretary-General stated that achieving peace in the Middle East region is a strategic objective for his organization. He added that this peace could not be achieved in a just, lasting and comprehensive manner before the Palestinian people obtain their legitimate rights, foremost of which is their right to establish their independent state on the 1967 parallel with East Al-Quds as its capital, based on international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
During a ministerial meeting entitled “Chad is on the path to returning to the constitutional system” held later, Taha renewed OIC’s support for the efforts made by the government of Chad to ensure the success of the transitional phase preceding the return to the constitutional system, calling at the same time on partners and international organizations to support Chad to overcome the current challenges.
Taha also met with the Vice President of the Republic of Gambia Mohammed Jallow who briefed him on the ongoing preparations for the 15th Islamic Summit, scheduled to be hosted by the Gambian capital of Banjul on December 16 and 17, 2023.
On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session, Taha also had a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cameroon, Lejeune Mbella during which he appreciated the important role that Cameroon plays within the framework of OIC.
For his part, the Cameroonian Foreign Minister informed the OIC senior official of the ongoing preparations to hold the 50th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of OIC, which Cameroon will host next year. In addition, the two sides discussed bilateral relations between OIC and Cameroon as well as some issues of common interest.
