African Union Expresses Regret over Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger’s Withdrawal from ECOWAS

Addis Ababa, January 31 (QNA) – The African Union (AU) on Tuesday expressed “deep regret” after Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger’s decision to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, learnt, with deep regret, the announcement of the withdrawal of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso from ECOWAS,” the AU said in a statement.

“In this regard, he expresses the full readiness of the African Union Commission to give all assistance, within its power, to ensure the success of the logic of brotherly dialogue far from any external interference from any quarter,” the statement added.

Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced, in a joint statement on Sunday, that they would be leaving ECOWAS “without delay”. (QNA)
