Amman, Dec. 30 (Petra) – Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Hneifat, signed six agreements on Monday with the heads of local cooperative associations to utilize water harvesting projects in the Southern Jordan Valley.
According to a ministry statement, the agreements are part of efforts to promote the water-energy-food nexus approach in the agricultural sector.
Hneifat stated that the agreements aim to create job opportunities for local communities and optimize the use of agricultural resources. The ministry has installed solar-powered water pumps for water harvesting reservoirs, delivering water to cooperative farms within the project area.
The minister emphasized that the ministry plans to expand these activities in the future due to their importance in efficiently utilizing water from earthen reservoirs and creating job opportunities for local communities.
The heads of the associations highlighted the project’s significance in reducing groundwater depletion, lowering energy costs in agriculture, and increasing the income of farmers benefiting from the water harvesting reservoirs.
