Amman Mayor Advocates for Localizing Sustainable Development Goals at UN Meeting

Amman, September 26 (Petra) – Mayor of Amman Yousef Shawarbeh participated in the closing session of the Advisory Group on Local and Regional Governments in New York, which aimed to present the group’s findings to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as part of the Summit for the Future, focusing on multilateralism, alignment between national and local governments, and tangible solutions for multiple global crises.

The meeting emphasized the need to localize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through innovative financing, bridging financial gaps for local governments, and fostering national and local cooperation.

Shawarbeh highlighted Jordan’s achievements in this area, including the launch of the country’s first voluntary review report alongside the second national review at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Shawarbeh urged the United Nations to accelerate efforts to meet the SDGs through collaborative mechanisms and by leveraging the “Local Alliance 2030” as a platform for coordinating efforts to achieve a better quality of life for communities.

He also discussed the importance of digital transformation during his session on “The Future of Technology and Localization of Sustainable Development Goals,” underscoring Amman’s progress towards becoming a smart city since 2019.

In a dialogue session organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the World Resources Institute, Shawarbeh stressed the critical role of cities in addressing urban and climate challenges. He reaffirmed Amman’s commitment to aligning its development and climate strategies with global sustainable goals.

Shawarbeh also participated in the annual meeting of the Mayors Migration Council, where he advocated for cities to take a leading role in managing migration and displacement issues. He called for collaboration between cities, national governments, and international organizations to provide innovative and sustainable solutions for migrants and refugees.

On the sidelines, Shawarbeh held discussions with key UN officials, including UN-Habitat Executive Director Anaclaudia Rossbach and Assistant High Commissioner for Operations at the UNHCR Raouf Mazou, focusing on enhancing partnerships and securing resources to support refugee protection and empowerment in Amman.
