Amman, Oct. 2 (Petra) – Minister of Labor, Dr. Khaled Bakkar, discussed on Wednesday with President of General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU), Khaled Fanatseh, the challenges facing workers in the Kingdom’s labor market.
During the meeting, which was attended by the heads of labor unions, Bakkar stressed the ministry’s keenness to build a “true” partnership with the GFJTU and other unions and build on previous progress to preserve worker rights.
Bakkar noted the next stage will see a “constructive, structured and organized” dialogue with all the ministry’s partners to reach agreements that achieve balance for the three production parties of workers, employers and government.
Continuiing: “Future decisions will not be “unilateral or improvised by one side,” since the goal is to provide a “decent” work environment in the labor market and provide job opportunities for Jordanians.
The minister stated that the two amended Labor and Social Security Laws are under process and any comments are welcome to improve their provisions.
Once the bills are approved by the Council of Ministers, they will be sent to the Lower House of Representatives, he pointed out.
Regarding raising the minimum wage, Bakkar said the ministry is “committed” to previous progress, adding that a dialogue will be launched in the next two months with the production parties to raise the minimum wage next year.
“Demands of the GFJTU and labor unions are valued and the ministry will study them carefully to achieve the public interest for all,” he said.
