Amman, November 14 (Petra) — Minister of State for Economic Affairs Muhannad Shehadeh underscored the importance of economic and social councils as symbols of partnership and democratic involvement in economic and social matters, emphasizing the need to coordinate efforts among Arab economic and social councils and similar entities.
In his remarks at the annual meeting of the Federation of Arab Economic and Social Councils and Similar Bodies, held for the first time in Amman on Thursday, Shehadeh highlighted the value of integrating national economic and social policies with social partners to foster balanced growth, achieve social justice, and build social cohesion.
He affirmed that successive Jordanian governments regard the Economic and Social Council not as a mere advisory body but as a critical institution to assess the impact of decisions and legislation on Jordanian citizens, guided by His Majesty King Abdullah II’s vision for comprehensive reforms.
Shehadeh pointed to Jordan’s transformation in economic, social, and political life, including conducting transparent parliamentary elections recognized globally. He emphasized the importance of participatory democracy, peace, and social stability in the Arab world, in line with principles of global justice and in coordination with international bodies.
President of the Federation of Arab Economic and Social Councils Rabia Kharfi praised the Federation as a testament to Arab unity and cooperation. She highlighted the advisory role of these councils in shaping strategies that promote economic and social progress in Arab countries, aiming to unify visions on key issues affecting the Arab world.
Director-General of the Arab Labor Organization, Fayez Mutairi, commended Jordan’s leadership for hosting the meeting, acknowledging the developmental strides made under King Abdullah II. He underscored the Federation’s mission to support civil peace, social dialogue, and Arab human rights, calling for a broader role for economic and social councils in Arab countries.
The President of Jordan’s Economic and Social Council and Federation Vice President, Dr. Musa Shteiwi, described these councils as essential to national progress, safeguarding public interests, and ensuring alignment of economic and social decisions with citizen needs. He highlighted the Council’s ongoing work to enhance community peace, security, and sustainable development.
The meeting’s agenda includes approving the draft agenda of the General Assembly, reviewing previous minutes from Algeria’s 2022 session, discussing reforms to the Federation’s framework, and formulating the work plan for 2025. The session will conclude with a final statement.
The Federation of Arab Economic and Social Councils and Similar Bodies includes councils from Jordan, Algeria, Palestine, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritania, and other representative bodies across the Arab world.
Jordan postponed hosting the 2023 session due to the ongoing war on Gaza and its regional impacts.
