San Salvador, February 05 (QNA) – El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele announced he had won a second term as president of the country, after securing more than 85% of vote in the presidential elections held on Sunday.
“According to our numbers, we won the presidential election with more than 85% of the votes and a minimum of 58 out of 60 Assembly deputies,” Bukele said.
Speaking before official results were announced, he described the outcome as a “record in the entire democratic history of the world”.
More than 6.2 million eligible voters, including more than 740,000 abroad – most of them in the United States – casted their ballot in nearly 1,700 polling centers.
Voting in El Salvador is not compulsory. Voter turnover in the 2019 presidential elections was just over 50% when Bukele also won in the first round with 53% of the vote. (QNA)
