Amman, August 5 (Petra) – At least 56 people, including 14 women, died when a boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Yemen two days ago, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, IOM reported that many of the victims are believed to be Ethiopian nationals. So far, 12 survivors all male have been rescued.
The organisation emphasised that the tragic incident underscores the urgent need to address the dangers associated with irregular migration along the eastern route.
It called for immediate life-saving assistance and protection for vulnerable migrants, while also advocating for efforts to tackle the root causes driving irregular migration.
