Environment Minister Hails Strategic Partnership with UNDP as Model for Sustainable Development

Amman, Oct. 19 (Petra) – Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman on Sunday underscored the depth of the strategic partnership between Jordan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), describing it as a leading model supporting the Kingdom’s efforts to protect the environment and advance sustainable development.

During a meeting with Andrés Efren Montalvo Sosa, President of the Executive Board of the UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS, and his accompanying delegation, Suleiman said that projects implemented in cooperation with UNDP align with the Economic Modernization Vision through a focus on green growth, natural resource management, biodiversity protection and the transition toward a circular economy.

He explained that the ministry, in partnership with the UNDP and other development partners, is implementing key projects that help build local community capacities, enhance resource sustainability and strengthen the resilience of environmental sectors to climate challenges.

Suleiman noted that climate change has gained growing national attention, adding that Jordan is currently preparing its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) document in cooperation with UNDP. The document serves as a national framework for emissions reduction and climate adaptation, in line with Jordan’s international commitments and the Paris Agreement.

He emphasized that despite its limited resources, Jordan remains committed to environmental and climate transformation, recognizing environmental protection as a cornerstone of sustainable development. He said the partnership with UNDP and other UN agencies provides a strong platform to achieve these goals and reinforce Jordan’s regional standing in climate action.

The minister also commended UNDP’s support in preparing national climate reports, developing green financing strategies, and strengthening institutional capacity, stressing that such efforts align with the state’s drive toward a more efficient and sustainable economy.

For his part, Sosa praised Jordan’s progress in environmental and climate action and lauded the Environment Ministry’s efforts to strengthen national policies responsive to climate challenges. He affirmed UNDP’s continued cooperation with the Jordanian government to support green transition and environmental innovation projects that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Economic Modernization Vision.
