New York, Nov. 16 (Petra) The UN Security Council will convene on Monday to discuss the Palestinian question, with members expected to vote on a U.S.-drafted resolution that would authorize the deployment of an “international stabilization force” in Gaza a proposal Russia is opposing as a veto-holding permanent member.

Washington hopes the resolution will secure the Council’s approval to mandate what it calls a “Peace Committee,” chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump, to administer Gaza on an interim basis through the end of December 2027.

Russia, however, argues that the Security Council itself is the body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. In a statement, Moscow said the Council “must be given an appropriate role and the tools required to ensure accountability and oversight,” adding that Council resolutions should reflect internationally recognized legal frameworks and core principles foremost among them the two-state solution as the basis for resolving the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

The Russian memo concluded that the U.S. draft “does not take these provisions into account.”
