Amman, August 30 (Petra) – At least seven people were killed and 23
others remain missing after a ferry carrying about 270 passengers and
crew members capsised off the coast of northern Cyprus on Sunday.
According to Reuters, authorities said the privately owned ferry
departed from the port of Girne in northern Cyprus at noon and began
taking on water shortly afterward for reasons that remain unclear.
The ferry was en route to the Turkish port of Taşucu, in the eastern
Mediterranean province of Mersin.
Northern Cyprus was hit by severe storms on Saturday, with one person
killed after a sailboat crashed into rocks in rough seas southeast of
the island.
