Authorities Reopen Desert Highway as Dust Storms Ease; Thunderstorms Expected in Some Areas

Amman, Aug. 11 (Petra) – Authorities have reopened the Desert Highway in both directions after a heavy dust storm forced a temporary closure late Sunday, the Public Security Directorate’s Highway Patrol Department announced.

The closure was imposed due to thick dust and severely reduced visibility. Patrol teams stationed at the Zmela security point assisted motorists affected by the conditions, including several cases of oxygen shortage, providing first aid and cold water. The department said patrol units remain on-site to offer both security and humanitarian assistance.

Drivers have been urged to exercise extreme caution, with the Highway Patrol warning of possible road slipperiness as rain follows the dust storm. Motorists were also encouraged to request assistance whenever needed.

According to the Jordan Meteorological Department, dust conditions in eastern Amman and the country’s eastern regions are now dissipating and visibility is improving. The department said the kingdom will remain under the influence of hot, dusty weather today, with high temperatures over the highlands and extreme heat elsewhere.

By midday, conditions are expected to shift as a state of atmospheric instability develops, bringing scattered showers and occasional thunderstorms in various parts of the country. Short periods of heavy rain are likely in the south and east, accompanied by northwesterly to northeasterly winds that may kick up more dust in desert areas.

The Meteorological Department has reiterated warnings about the impact of dust storms on visibility, particularly in eastern Amman, and urged the public to remain vigilant.
