Authorities seal 17 illegal wells in Jordan Valley crackdown

Amman, May 13 (Petra) – The Ministry of Water and Irrigation, along with the Jordan Valley Authority and in coordination with relevant security agencies, launched a campaign to shut down illegal wells and dismantle unauthorized water infrastructure in the Al-Kafrein Dam area of Southern Shouneh.

According to an official statement issued Tuesday, authorities sealed 17 unauthorized wells dug on state-owned land that had been illegally appropriated. These wells were reportedly extracting tens of thousands of cubic meters of water daily to supply unlicensed farms through unauthorized pipeline networks.

Technical teams from the Central Workshops Directorate and the Water Basins Directorate completed the sealing operations, dismantling infrastructure across multiple locations. This included removing unauthorized pipelines, disconnecting illegal water connections, and confiscating equipment such as cables and transformers. All violations were documented and referred to the appropriate legal channels for further action.

The Water Authority and the Jordan Valley Authority reaffirmed their ongoing commitment, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and the Public Security Directorate, to enforce the law and protect the country’s water resources. They warned that the toughest legal penalties would be imposed on anyone found tampering with or illegally exploiting water resources.
