AWC implemented 2 new projects to enhance Aqaba’s water supply efficiency

Aqaba, Feb. 9 (Petra) – Aqaba Water Company (AWC) has completed implementation of two projects to replace pumps in remote villages and establish new fixtures at Rum station, which were recently carried out with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) at a cost of about JD1.25 million.

In a press statement Sunday, the company said pump replacement in remote villages is a “major” step to improve water supply in 7 different areas in Aqaba.

The statement added that this scheme contributed to enhancing pumping efficiency, reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs, boosting operational safety, and cutting carbon emissions by 300 tonnes annually.

Under the same project, the AWC remarked works installed new pumping stations, made comprehensive maintenance for old facilities and launched mechanical and electrical improvements.

Meanwhile, the new fixtures at Rum station eyed to enhance water infrastructure to keep pace with the population and tourism expansion in the southern Rum area, which was suffering from a water shortage.

Besides pump replacement in remote villages, the project established a concrete tank with a capacity of 200 cubic meters and extended a 6-km water transmission pipeline from Shakriya station, which enhanced efficiency of water supply and reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions.

The AWC pointed out that the two projects represent an “important” achievement in improving Aqaba’s water sector and reflect commitment of the concerned authorities to achieve “sustainable” development and ensure sustainability of water resources.
