Amman, Sept. 2 (Petra) – Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced Tuesday that Belgium will recognize a Palestinian state during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly this month.
In a post on X, Prevot said, “In light of the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, in response to Israel’s violence in violation of international law, and given our international obligations, including the duty to prevent any risk of genocide, Belgium was compelled to take firm decisions to increase pressure on the Israeli government.”
He added that 12 strict sanctions will be applied at the national level, including a ban on importing products from settlements, a review of public procurement policies with Israeli companies, and restrictions on consular assistance to Belgians residing in settlements deemed illegal under international law.
