Government Communication Minister Highlights Media Literacy Role in Combating Hate Speech

Amman, May 6 (Petra) – Minister of Government Communication and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani emphasized the importance of enhancing community awareness to address the challenges posed by the vast amount of information in the digital age. He noted that strengthening media literacy is the most effective approach to combating hate speech and preventing the spread of misleading and false information.

Speaking during a meeting held at the Ministry’s headquarters with Secretary-General Zaid Nawaiseh and members of the “Baklan” Development Organization, Momani highlighted Jordan’s leadership in the region regarding media education and literacy.

He stressed the necessity of developing critical thinking and the ability to distinguish between accurate and inaccurate information and to differentiate between legitimate opinion and hate speech. This, he noted, requires comprehensive knowledge and analytical skills to navigate an overwhelming influx of populist discourse that often fuels hatred and incites division.

Momani noted that the Ministry works to engage with citizens, young entrepreneurs, and volunteers from associations and institutions that support entrepreneurial development. These efforts aim to clarify and explain the rationale and implications of government decisions and policies.

He affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to presenting the Jordanian state’s narrative in a balanced and comprehensive manner while combating hate speech. He emphasized that the state’s official discourse has consistently been rational and moderate, serving as a cornerstone in safeguarding national interests and promoting social cohesion.

Momani announced that the Ministry, in partnership with the Jordan Media Institute and local education directorates, will implement a long-term strategic action plan that includes workshops on media education and literacy. He expressed pride in the awareness among Jordanian youth, particularly their ability to differentiate between rumors and verified information.

During the meeting, members of the Baklan Organization outlined the organization’s key initiatives and community service efforts. They also presented proposals addressing social responsibility, the verification of false and misleading information, the importance of avoiding rumor propagation, and strategies for confronting misinformation through awareness and informed dialogue.
