New York, May 13 (Petra) – UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres emphasized that peacekeeping is still an essential instrument for bringing about peace and advocated for bolstering peacekeeping efforts to better meet present and future global challenges.
Speaking at the ministerial meeting on the future of peacekeeping, hosted by Germany, Guterres reaffirmed that the UN was founded on the belief that peace is achievable when humanity stands united. He highlighted that UN peacekeepers symbolize global solidarity by maintaining ceasefires, protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian aid, and supporting long-term recovery in conflict zones.
Guterres underscored the growing challenges facing peacekeeping missions today, including more complex and transboundary conflicts, global polarization, disinformation campaigns targeting missions, terrorism, climate-related instability, and widespread disregard for international law.
He stressed that amid record levels of conflict and displacement, peacekeeping operations are under unprecedented pressure. Guterres identified key priorities for the future, including adapting peacekeeping to modern realities, improving resource utilization, and ensuring political backing through financial contributions and strategic commitments.
