Amman, Jan. 7 (Petra) – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced Tuesday that the Republic of Ireland has submitted a request to join South Africa in its case against Israel at the ICJ.
This request follows the Irish government’s approval last month to join the case filed by South Africa against Israel under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Under Article 63 of the ICJ Statute, countries can provide a general statement on how they interpret the Genocide Convention, which is central to the dispute, in addition to addressing the specific events forming the basis of the case.
Ireland’s involvement stems from its status as a party to the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Ireland contends that Articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the convention are at issue and has outlined its interpretation of Articles 1, 2, and 3 in its declaration.
