Amman, Aug. 12 (Petra) — Jordan on Tuesday hosted senior officials from Syria and the United States for a high-level meeting focused on Syria’s future, exploring ways to rebuild the country on foundations that safeguard its security, stability, sovereignty, and unity, while meeting the aspirations of its people and protecting the rights of all Syrians.
The talks brought together Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani, and U.S. Special Envoy for Syria and Ambassador to Türkiye Thomas Barrack, alongside representatives from relevant institutions in the three countries.
The meeting built on discussions held in Amman on July 19 aimed at consolidating a ceasefire in the southern province of As-Suwayda and addressing the crisis there.
Participants stressed that As-Suwayda, in all its local communities, is an integral part of the Syrian Arab Republic, with its residents entitled to full rights in shaping the country’s future.
They underscored the importance of ensuring the governorate’s inclusion in Syria’s reconstruction journey toward a safe and stable future for all citizens, with guarantees of representation and participation.
Jordan and the United States welcomed steps announced by the Syrian government, including full investigations and accountability for all perpetrators of crimes and violations in As-Suwayda; readiness to cooperate with relevant UN bodies and involve them in the investigative process; expanded humanitarian access across the province in coordination with UN agencies; and stepped-up efforts to restore disrupted public services and begin rehabilitation of affected areas.
They also noted the Syrian government’s commitment to supporting the return of displaced residents, advancing community reconciliation, and strengthening civil peace efforts that Jordan and the United States pledged to back.
Safadi and Barrack reaffirmed their countries’ full solidarity with Syria’s security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, urging the international community to stand with Syria in rebuilding on principles that ensure long-term peace, stability, and unity, while fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.
The three sides agreed to meet again in the coming weeks to continue discussions and to respond to a Syrian government request to form a trilateral working group to support efforts to maintain the ceasefire in As-Suwayda and bring the crisis to an end.
