Killing of Journalists in Gaza Should Shock the World and Prompt Action: UN Geneva, 27 Aug (ONA) — The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) affirmed that the killing of journalists in the Gaza Strip should shock the world and prompt it to take action to demand accountability and justice.
OHCHR Spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said the Israeli occupation forces launched several airstrikes on Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, with two airstrikes occurring within a short period of time.
In response to a question about the killing of journalists in Israeli airstrikes on Nasser Hospital last Monday, he added, “We know that one of the five journalists appears to have been killed in the first airstrike while three others including the women journalist appear to have been killed in the second airstrike. This is a shock and this is unacceptable.”
“At least 247 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023,” he continued. “These journalists are the eyes and the ears of the whole world and they must be protected.”
He stressed that targeting journalists is prohibited, as is targeting hospitals. He said that the Israeli occupation authorities have previously announced investigations into these killings, adding, “these investigations need to yield results. There needs to be justice. We haven’t seen results or accountability measures yet.”
The OHCHR spokesperson pointed out that the world has not yet seen any results or accountability measures, and the results of these investigations have not yet emerged.— Ends/Khalid
