Amman, Aug 13 (Petra) – Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Al-Momani on Wednesday underscored the importance of media in shaping public opinion, describing it as a cornerstone of the state’s overarching strategy and an effective tool in bolstering comprehensive national security.
Delivering a lecture titled “The Role of Media in Strengthening the Security System and Combating Rumors” to master’s students at the Royal Police Academy, Al-Momani outlined the media’s vital role in supporting political, economic and social development and in reinforcing the strength of the state and society.
Al-Momani, who is also the government spokesman, pointed to the challenges posed by rapid shifts in the regional and global environment and their accompanying complex crises, stressing the need for a balanced and informed national media discourse capable of countering targeted propaganda and crafting a unified national narrative that strengthens the country and supports the home front.
Al-Momani said media is a key partner to security agencies in maintaining stability through raising national awareness and broadening community engagement, adding that responsible messaging is essential amid fast-moving events.
He noted that Jordanian media is one of the national pillars of the state’s top strategy, playing a central role in shaping public awareness and reinforcing Jordan’s national identity, while embedding the concept of comprehensive national security and fostering complementarity with security institutions and social solidarity.
The success of any national project or reform plan, he said, depends on the media’s ability to explain and advocate for it, highlighting its role in building mutual trust between official institutions and the public. The rapidly changing and challenging regional and global environment, he added, requires the development of a national media discourse capable of confronting targeted propaganda, disinformation and fake news.
Al-Momani described security and military media as an advanced line of defense, balancing the public’s right to information with the protection of national security. He said security and military communications in Jordan are characterized by high professionalism and carefully planned strategies to deal with rumors and misinformation, noting the need to instill a responsible media culture that respects privacy and freedom while safeguarding supreme national interests.
He stressed the importance of giving professional media sufficient space to fulfill its oversight role a hallmark of the Jordanian state throughout its history and a source of societal strength adding that “responsible freedom” remains the state’s strategic vision for media.
The session, attended by Assistant Director of the Public Security Directorate for Operations and Training Brig. Gen. Mohammad Al-Omari, the Royal Police Academy commandant, and several senior Public Security Directorate officers, concluded with a detailed discussion in which the minister answered participants’ questions.
