Ministry, Private Hospitals Association Discuss Advancing Medical Tourism

Amman, Aug. 20 (Petra) – The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Private Hospitals Association (PHA) on Wednesday discussed mechanisms to strengthen Jordan’s position as a leading hub for medical tourism and address the challenges facing the sector.

The meeting brought together Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Imad Hijazin, PHA President Fawzi Hammouri, the Association’s Secretary Mohammad Thneibat, and Executive Director Nasr Majali.

Hijazin underlined the PHA’s efforts in developing the medical tourism sector, stressing the importance of strong public-private partnerships to achieve shared objectives. He added that the ministry is studying coordination with the Ministry of Health to unify efforts and reactivate the “Salamatak” digital healthcare platform, which would contribute to stimulating medical tourism and bolstering Jordan’s regional and international competitiveness in medical and wellness tourism.

Hammouri reaffirmed the association’s readiness to cooperate fully with the Ministry of Tourism and the Jordan Tourism Board to advance Jordan’s position as a premier medical tourism destination. He noted that Jordan possesses the expertise and infrastructure to serve as a preferred choice for patients from across the Arab world and beyond.

He highlighted the need for a comprehensive review of the sector, addressing internal and external challenges, and implementing a targeted marketing program in partnership with stakeholders.

Hammouri stressed the importance of focusing on traditional markets while developing plans to access new ones, emphasizing the opportunity presented by the 2023 United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) declaration recognizing Jordan as a medical tourism destination.

He also underscored the significance of medical tourism as a key driver of the national economy, a source of foreign currency, and a provider of employment opportunities for Jordanians.
