Amman, Aug 16 (Petra) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent remark on so-called “Greater Israel” is “a miserable maneuver that unveils an internal crisis he tries to export abroad,” Jordanian analysts and experts said on Saturday.
“Jordan is resilient to threats, having the means of power to counter any threats and maintain its constants toward the Palestinian issue,” they commented on Netanyahu’s interview last week in which he said he was “very much” attached to the vision for a “Greater Israel”, including the occupied West Bank, Gaza and parts of Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt.
“Netanyahu’s statements reflect Israeli politicians’ anger and resentment toward Jordan’s positions, led by His Majesty the King, in supporting our brothers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and exposing the crimes of genocide committed by the occupation (authority) in international forums,” said Senator Mohammad Dawoudia, head of the Senate’s Media and National Guidance Committee.
“Such statements are not new, but they cannot be ignored and should cause alarm. However, Jordan has the means of strength; its national unity, a strong Arab army, and wide international relations, which enable it to protect its interests and advocate for a just and comprehensive peace,” he said.
Sultan Maani, a historian, said Netanyahu’s remark is part of an Israeli narrative seeking to “legitimize” an expansionist settlement project that is in violation of international law.
He said Jordan’s response through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was swift and unequivocal, calling the statement a “dangerous escalation, a provocation, and a threat to the sovereignty of states.”
Jordan, Maani said, entrenches its position on three tracks: international law as a reference, building regional and international coalitions, and tying the expansionist discourse to the illegal settlements.
Political analyst Hamza Akaileh said Netanyahu’s remark “is a pathetic maneuver” to divert attention from his internal crises. He said Jordan, with a cohesive leadership and people and a solidly-rooted diplomatic record, stands as a block against such schemes.
“Jordan is not in a position of reacting, but acting and influencing, based on historical legitimacy, a consistent political and moral stance, and deep popular cohesion,” said security and political expert Hussein Sarhan. It remains a considerable power in the region’s equations and a shield in the defense of Palestine and Arab rights, he added.
He said Netanyahu’s statement cannot be separated from his attempt to escalate the regional situation, adding that Jordan, with its diplomatic credentials, political moderation, and solid international relations, can deal with any challenges.
