
Oman Participates in World Free Zones Conference in ChinaHainan, 12 Oct (ONA) —— The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), participated in the World Free Zones Conference held in Haikou, China, engaging in the 11th global gathering of the World Free Zones Organization under the theme “Zones: Gateways to Global Prosperity, Trade, and Sustainable Innovation.”Delegates examined the future role of special economic zones and free zones in advancing global trade and sustainable development amid ongoing fluctuations in trade policies, climate challenges, and rapid technological shifts in artificial intelligence and renewable energy.The Omani delegation was led by Sheikh Dr. Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy, Chairman of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, and included representatives from the Special Economic Zone at Duqm and the Sohar Free Zone.In his address at the conference’s strategic ministerial meeting, Al Sunaidy underscored the importance of digital transformation and global economic integration among free zones. He highlighted the essential role of modern technology and renewable energy in advancing clean industries, strengthening supply chains, and facilitating the mobility of industrial operations across regions.He outlined Oman’s progress in developing special economic and free zones, with notable growth in renewable energy, green industries, and logistics. Noting that integration between ports and economic zones is key to sustainable development, he reported that investment across Oman’s 15 economic zones, free zones, and industrial cities has reached $54 billion by the end of 2024.He also took part in a key dialogue session titled “Pathways to Prosperity: Free Zones and the Future of Trade,” which addressed shifts in global supply chains and the role of free zones in fostering economic openness and regional integration. Additional sessions focused on green transition and implementing carbon neutrality standards.The Omani delegation held meetings with representatives of economic and free zones from various countries to exchange expertise and explore collaboration aimed at boosting investment flows and trade.They also met with companies looking to expand their investments in medical, pharmaceutical, and green energy industrial clusters, highlighting the attractive incentives offered by Oman’s special economic and free zones.As part of the visit, the delegation conducted field tours to the International Economic Development Office in Hainan Province and the Jiangdong Free Trade Zone, gaining insight into the province’s plan to transform entirely into a free zone by December.The conference also featured an Executive Leadership Program focusing on innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability, as well as digital solutions for trade restructuring and smart management of economic zones.Oman’s participation follows its recent membership in the World Free Zones Organization, reinforcing the country’s commitment to strengthening its international economic presence, sharing best practices, and attracting targeted investment to diversify the national economy.—— Ends/Khalid
