Omani
Designer Weaves Heritage, Modernity into Jewelry Artistry

Nizwa,
8 Dec 2025 (ONA) — Omani designer Afrah Al Ishaqi is illuminating the realm
of jewelry design, fusing traditional craftsmanship with contemporary
innovation. Her creations draw inspiration from Omani landscapes, the nation’s
rich heritage, Islamic art and timeless human narratives.

In a
statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Afrah bint Nasser Al Ishaqi, a professor
at the University of Nizwa and a jewelry designer, remarked: “My work
integrates diverse cultures and artistic traditions by studying the symbols and
visual elements embedded within them. I reinterpret these motifs through my
unique creative lens, resulting in modern designs that honour their origins
while introducing a fresh, contemporary perspective. My process combines
digital design software for initial planning, hand sketching, and traditional
goldsmithing techniques such as sawing, soldering, shaping and polishing.”

She
elaborated on the challenges she faces: “Maintaining a harmonious balance
between artistic integrity and commercial viability remains a key
consideration. Additional hurdles include sourcing specific materials and
accessing specialized local artisans. Raising public appreciation for handcrafted
design also requires continued advocacy. My aim is to cultivate support and
opportunities for emerging talent and to elevate the standing of art and design
in society as a lasting source of inspiration.”

She
emphasized her commitment to sustainability, noting that the materials in her
designs are consciously chosen to reflect environmental and social
responsibility. “I am dedicated to selecting eco-friendly resources and
believe the future of design lies in a thoughtful approach that respects both
nature and people,” she stated.

She
has pioneered a modern aesthetic for Omani jewelry by masterfully blending
traditional cultural symbols with innovative and sophisticated forms. She
employs advanced techniques to refine time-honoured craftsmanship while
preserving its authentic essence, creating pieces that bridge heritage and
contemporary style.

She
views the design process as an opportunity to transform concepts into tangible
beauty. “In my work, I seek out details that convey a narrative—be it symbolic
or emotional. By harmonizing precious materials with modern methods, I strive
to create designs that unite tradition and innovation. Each piece is an
expression of inner elegance, meant to captivate and resonate deeply,” she
shared.

Her
vision is embodied in her brand, “Jewelara”, a venture she describes as
translating personal sensibility and emotion into wearable art. “Jewelara
is about creating pieces that impart a sense of uniqueness and distinction to
the wearer. My aspiration is to build an enduring artistic legacy that
transcends temporary trends,” she said. Looking ahead, she aims to expand
her creative influence and establish “Jewelara” as a recognized name in
regional and global jewelry design.

Among
her notable commissions, Afrah designed a piece for HH Sayyedah Basma bint
Fakhri Al Said, drawing inspiration from the historic legacy of Nizwa. She also
created a design for Sayyedah Wafa bint Hilal Al Busaidi, inspired by the
iconic Omani frankincense blossom.

Her
accomplishments include being honoured among an elite group of distinguished
Omani women on Omani Women’s Day. She was also recognized at the prestigious
pan-Gulf and Arab world event, the “Elegance Fashion Show,” and
received the 2025 award for Best Jewelry Designer in the Sultanate of Oman.

Her
work has been featured in the pages of “Anaqati” or “My Elegance”
magazine, where she showcased the identity of “Jewelara” with elegance and
professionalism, conveying her artistic vision and meticulous attention to
detail.
