Oman’s
First Copper Mining Waste Conversion Plant in Sohar Inaugurated

Sohar,
2 Jun (ONA) – The Sultanate of Oman’s first-of-its-kind facility to transform
legacy copper mining waste into pure copper using advanced, sustainable
technologies was inaugurated today in Sohar.

This
landmark project reflects the Oman’s commitment to sustainable
industrialization and green economic diversification.

The
opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Qais Mohammed Al Yousef,
Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, in the presence of
several dignitaries and executives from the public and private sectors.

The
project aims to convert environmental challenges into economic opportunities by
repurposing copper mining waste into production chains, aligning with the
industrial strategy of Oman Vision 2040. It underscores the government’s
dedication to enhancing local resource value, domesticating natural
resource-based industries, and boosting the industrial sector’s regional and
global competitiveness.

According
to operational plans, Phase 1 production will begin this June, with an initial
output of 60 tonnes annually of “green copper cathode”—a sustainably
recycled metal. By December 2026, capacity is projected to rise to 12,000
tonnes per year, reinforcing Oman’s position as a hub for green industries and
sustainable mining.

Dr.
Saleh Said Masan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and
Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry, stated that the project marks a
qualitative leap toward an innovation-driven, sustainable industrial base. He
emphasized the ministry’s focus on attracting strategic investments with
economic and environmental impact.

He
added that the project embodies public-private synergy, supports industrial
localization, and serves as a model for clean technology deployment, balancing
economic growth with environmental preservation.

Eng.
Khalid Salim Al Qasabi, Director General of Industry at the Ministry,
highlighted the ministry’s efforts to foster advanced industrial investments
through streamlined regulations and high technical standards.

Ernst
Grissemann, Group Executive Director of BPG Group noted that the project
results from a strategic partnership launched in 2018. He affirmed that Phase
1—powered by renewable energy—reflects the company’s sustainability commitments
and support for green economy initiatives.

Developed
by Green Tech Mining & Services LLC, the RO 41 million project is Oman’s first
initiative to process mining waste into high-value metal products.

The
project exemplifies Oman’s transition toward innovation and sustainability,
positioning the Oman as a leader in eco-friendly industries and unlocking new
opportunities for resource-efficient sustainable investment.
