Amman, Jan 26 (Petra) – The Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine called for urgent measures to protect Al-Aqsa Mosque from threats of Judaization and attacks by Israeli forces and settlers, coinciding with the commemoration of Isra’ and Mi’raj.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its chairman, Ramzi Khoury, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, the committee emphasized that Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, as the site of the Prophet Muhammad’s night journey and ascension to heaven, are a trust held by the Arab and Islamic nations, requiring their defense and protection by all means.
The committee stressed that the significance of this occasion underscores the collective responsibility to save Al-Aqsa Mosque from Israeli control and settler incursions, which are accelerating new Judaization projects in the holy city and its Islamic and Christian sites.
The statement warned of Israeli plans involving annexation, settlement expansion, and displacement, implemented by the far-right Israeli government in the occupied West Bank. It also highlighted that the ongoing aggression in Jenin and its refugee camp mirrors the policies of killing, destruction, and displacement previously witnessed in Gaza, alongside targeting the Palestinian refugee cause.
The committee described the assault on Jenin and its camp as part of broader repressive measures by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank, which has effectively turned into a network of large prisons surrounded by military checkpoints and gates.
It added that the occupation continues to commit grave crimes aimed at denying the Palestinian people their fundamental rights, including self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. The committee reiterated that peace and security in the region cannot be achieved without a just resolution to the Palestinian issue.
