Project Underway to Upgrade Drainage System at Housha Tunnel on Irbid–Mafraq Road

Mafraq, Sept 14 (Petra) – The Ministry of Public Works and Housing is carrying out a JD500,000 project to repair and upgrade the stormwater drainage system at Housha Tunnel on the Irbid–Mafraq highway.

Ministry spokesperson Omar Maharmeh told Petra on Sunday that work is 20 percent complete, with a five-month completion timeline.

The project involves installing a 1,200-mm reinforced concrete main pipeline, building new drainage and inspection manholes, excavation and backfilling, rehabilitating asphalt layers, and repairing nearby water structures to ensure smooth rainwater discharge and prevent flooding.

Maharmeh said the rehabilitation seeks to resolve the recurrent flooding that has plagued the tunnel during rainy seasons, often disrupting traffic and posing risks to motorists. He added that the work will improve infrastructure and enhance road safety in this vital corridor.

Since its construction, Housha Tunnel has faced persistent flooding due to an undersized drainage system and the accumulation of debris in channels, frequently forcing authorities to close the passage to traffic for varying periods.
