Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, British delegation discuss ties, region

Amman, August 4 (Petra) – The Senate’s Arab, International and Expatriate Affairs Committee, headed by Rapporteur, Senator Ali Al-Ayed, met on Monday with a British delegation of House of Commons’ Labour and Conservative candidates.

They discussed prospects to bolster Anglo-Jordanian parliamentary relations, issues of mutual interest and current regional and international challenges.

Al-Ayed told the delegation that Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, undertakes a pivotal role to enhance regional security and stability, and rallies for ramping up international efforts in support of that endeavor, especially in the midst of the ongoing aggression on the Gaza Strip.

A two-state solution based on international legitimacy resolutions, is the only path to ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, he reiterated. He also spoke about Jordan’s humanitarian efforts in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Ayed said Jordanian-British relations, based on solid foundations of mutual understanding and respect, are distinguished and steadily growing, adding that the meeting is a key opportunity to bolster parliamentary dialogue, given regional challenges.

Al-Ayed also said Jordan’s political, economic and administrative modernization process helped to empower youth and women in public life.

The committee also valued Britain’s continued support of Jordan, particularly in the development domain, stressing the need to further boost coordination in various areas of common interest.

For their part, members of the British team commended Jordan’s effective role in support of regional stability and peace, and noted the comprehensive modernization scheme in the Kingdom and progress made in the areas of governance and youth and women empowerment.

They called Jordan a key strategic partner of the United Kingdom in the Middle East, and a model balancing security and openness. They also noted the Kingdom’s efforts in hosting refugees and providing humanitarian aid to them despite economic challenges.
