Amman, Jan. 2 (Petra) — The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission (EETC) renewed their electricity exchange contract on Thursday, extending their cooperation through 2025.

The agreement was signed by Sufyan Bataineh, Director General of NEPCO, and Mona Rizk, Chairperson of the EETC, in the presence of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Kharabsheh.

Kharabsheh emphasized the agreement’s significance in enhancing electrical reliability and strengthening the energy infrastructure between the two countries. He noted that their collaboration serves as a regional model for electricity interconnection projects, which have spanned 25 years.

The renewed contract reflects a shared commitment to advancing energy systems and promoting regional electrical integration. Both parties underscored its role in stabilizing electrical networks, supporting the expansion of renewable energy use, and fostering sustainable development. They also highlighted ongoing feasibility studies to increase the capacity of the interconnection line between the two countries, which would further enhance energy security.

Since 1999, Jordan and Egypt have been exchanging electricity via a 400-kilovolt submarine cable that spans 13 kilometers across the Gulf of Aqaba, with a capacity of 500 megawatts. This interconnection is part of a broader eight-member regional network that includes Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Libya, and Turkiye.
