Jordan-Vatican Exhibition to Showcase Christian Heritage, Strengthen Cultural Ties

Amman, January 8 (Petra) – The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Lina Annab, announced that the ministry, in collaboration with the Vatican, will host an exhibition in Vatican City from January 31 to February 28.

The exhibition, titled “Jordan: The Dawn of Christianity,” marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Jordan and the Vatican, commemorates the 60th anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s historic visit to Jordan in 1964, and coincides with the Holy Jubilee Year under the theme “Pilgrimage of Hope.”

During a press conference, Annab emphasized the exhibition’s aim to highlight Jordan’s pivotal role as the birthplace of Christianity. The showcase will feature over 90 rare artifacts, including mosaics and ancient Christian symbols, such as the fish symbol, considered one of the most significant relics in Christian history. The exhibition offers insights into the development of Christianity in Jordan across various eras.

Annab described the event as a global invitation to explore Jordan’s rich religious history and its enduring message of peace and coexistence. It will begin with the story of Jesus Christ’s baptism, moving through the Byzantine period, and culminating in modern times, shedding light on the contributions of Jordanian Christians to arts and architecture from the first century CE to the present day.

The exhibition will also guide visitors through sacred Christian pilgrimage sites in Jordan recognized by the Vatican. These include Tell Mar Elias, believed to be the birthplace of the Prophet Elijah; the Church of Our Lady of the Mountain in Anjara, dedicated to the Virgin Mary; Mount Nebo, the resting place of the Prophet Moses; Mukawir Castle, the site of John the Baptist’s martyrdom; and the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, where John the Baptist baptized him.

Minister Annab reiterated that the exhibition underscores Jordan’s message of interfaith harmony and mutual respect, a vision championed by His Majesty King Abdullah II. She quoted His Majesty’s emphasis on Jordan’s heritage of peaceful coexistence and collaboration among diverse religious communities, noting the pivotal role of Christians in shaping the region’s past and future.

The exhibition is part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to advance religious and cultural tourism. It is expected to strengthen Jordan’s position as a leading Christian pilgrimage destination while reflecting the Kingdom’s dedication to preserving its religious and cultural heritage. Annab also revealed plans for similar exhibitions in France, Portugal, and Greece to enhance cultural exchange and strengthen Jordan’s ties with other nations.

The Holy See’s Ambassador Archbishop Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso, praised Jordan’s exceptional model of interfaith harmony and described the country as holy ground where Jesus was baptized. He highlighted Pope Francis’ commendation of His Majesty King Abdullah II as a man of peace.

Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat, Director General of the Jordan Tourism Board, stated that advanced display methods will be employed to provide visitors with a spiritual experience.

The exhibition aims to inspire its audience to explore Christian sites in Jordan, offering a historic opportunity to introduce millions of Vatican visitors to the sanctity and significance of the Kingdom’s religious heritage, he added.
