
Amman, Jan. 13 (Petra) – Senator Ihsan Barakat, met Monday with a group of master’s students from Johns Hopkins University, accompanied by Professor Stephen Schneebaum, an expert in international law. The meeting took place during their visit to the Jordanian Senate.
Senator Barakat highlighted Jordan’s pivotal role under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah in addressing regional and international issues. She emphasized the importance of resolving conflicts through peaceful and constructive means while affirming the right of nations to self-determination.
She also underlined the essential roles of the Senate and Lower House of Parliament in passing legislation that safeguards citizens’ rights and ensures the provision of high-quality services. Additionally, she noted the legislative and oversight functions these councils perform concerning the executive branch.
Senator Barakat further explained that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights obligates nations to guarantee universal access to water and sanitation services without discrimination, prioritizing those in the greatest need.
She addressed the significant challenges Jordan faces, including population growth and successive waves of refugees, emphasizing the critical importance of water as a vital resource upon which all sectors rely.
For their part, the students expressed their admiration for Jordan’s international efforts, led by His Majesty King Abdullah, in supporting humanitarian causes and advocating for peace in the region and worldwide.
They hailed Jordan’s progress in various economic, political, social, and cultural fields and its ability to provide essential services to its citizens. The students also commended the prominent role of Jordanian women in numerous fields.
