Amman, Jan. 14 (Petra) – Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat said that vegetable exports to Syria, recently resumed after a 13-year hiatus, are not subject to any taxes, as they are shipped directly from farms to Syrian markets.
Speaking on the JRTV Tuesday, the minister acknowledged new taxes imposed by the Syrian side, affirming that the ministry will engage with Syrian authorities to find solutions.
Hneifat highlighted that Jordan’s agricultural production is currently at its peak, meeting local market demands as well as export needs in the Gulf and Syrian markets. He expressed optimism that Jordanian agricultural products would soon reach European markets.
He noted, “We used to export over 200,000 tons to Syria and through it annually. For the past 13 years, this dropped to zero, but since the beginning of this year, we have resumed exporting 3,000 tons daily.” He reaffirmed Jordan’s readiness to share expertise and modern technologies to help develop Syria’s agricultural sector.
The minister explained that vegetables are consistently available in Jordanian markets year-round, with supply exceeding demand. The ministry is studying the requirements of foreign markets to facilitate exports. However, in cases where local prices rise, exports of those goods are halted to ensure affordability for consumers in the Kingdom.
