Bani Mustafa: Jordan took ‘remarkable’ steps to empower women

Amman, Feb. 23 (Petra) – Jordan has taken “remarkable” steps in developing an “appropriate” environment to support and empower women in all areas of life, Minister of Social Development, Head of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Women’s Empowerment, Wafa Bani Mustafa, said.

The minister made the remarks while deputizing for Prime Minister in inaugurating “Women on the Front Lines” Conference on Sunday, which was organized by the May Chidiac Foundation (MCF), with a wide Arab and foreign participation.

The minister noted the women’s presence in decision-making and engagement in development and progress should recognize their “effective” role in assuming leadership and providing the “adequate” environment to make their role “more effective.”

The minister noted the committee follows the Kingdom’s three political, economic, and administrative reform tracks, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, which launched the Women’s Empowerment Strategy in the Economic Modernization Vision, which aims to raise women’s participation to 28% by 2033.

During the past period, she said the committee launched an updated version of the guidelines on combating violence against women in public life and included electoral and cyber violence under this effort.

Jordan, she stated, is one of the first countries to fulfill its international obligations to ensure respect for human rights and ratified multiple treaties on women’s rights, which strengthened the Kingdom’s efforts in the field of women’s participation in decision-making.

Additionally, she noted the ministry launched national consultations on the draft of the updated National Social Protection Strategy (2025-2033), and added a fourth axis on responding to crises and shocks.

On its other projects, she remarked the ministry is also working on programs to empower women, primarily productivity enhancement programs to help families establish their own businesses, Oases Project, and Makani Project, in partnership with UNICEF and UN Women.
