Amman, May 12 (Petra) — The Jordanian Nursing Council noted the vital role of the nursing profession as a “safety valve” for healthcare, urging investing in nurses as a means of advancing healthcare and securing the country’s future.
In a statement issued on the occasion of International Nurses Day on Monday, the Council highlighted the global recognition and appreciation for nursing staff’s “crucial” contribution. It described nursing as the “backbone of healthcare institutions worldwide.”
Secretary-General of the Council Hani Nawafleh stated that the theme for International Nurses Day 2025 “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies” captures the essence of modern nursing philosophy.
Nawafleh explained that the slogan underscores the role of nurses not only as healthcare providers but also as active contributors to economic and social development, as well as pillars of sustainable health and societal prosperity.
He said recent years have demonstrated that investing in nursing is a necessity at both national and global levels. A well-qualified, specialised nurse serves as a safeguard for the health system, a shield against emerging health threats and a vital component in achieving sustainable development goals worldwide.
He praised Jordanian nurses for exemplifying knowledge, discipline and compassion. They have consistently supported patients and played pivotal roles in health systems, earning recognition locally and internationally.
Their resilience, he added, was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, “where they stood at the forefront, demonstrating courage and dedication under challenging circumstances.”
Nawafleh highlighted the unwavering support of Jordan’s leadership for the nursing profession, noting, “His Majesty King Abdullah II has repeatedly affirmed that Nursing is a noble humanitarian profession, and Jordanian nurses are a source of pride and honour for their distinguished service and contributions.”
This royal support not only honours the profession morally but also underscores directives to strengthen nursing as a core element of national health strategies and a valuable national asset.
He paid special tribute to Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al Hussein, patron of the nursing movement in Jordan, who has tirelessly supported nurses for decades.
Her Royal Highness has been a driving force behind efforts to elevate nursing education, improve work standards, and ensure the well-being of healthcare workers reflecting her vision of reinforcing nursing’s vital role in the healthcare system nationally and globally.
Nawafleh reaffirmed the Jordanian Nursing Council’s ongoing role as a protective and representative body for nurses, especially amid the increasing challenges facing healthcare.
He stressed that enhancing nurses’ skills and safeguarding their professional status are fundamental rights that underpin healthcare quality, institutional stability and the broader development of the national economy through a robust healthcare sector.
He called on government ministries, educational institutions and civil society to collaborate as true partners in advancing Jordanian nursing.
He urged the adoption of clear policies to support specialised nursing education, improve working environments and promote professional development and career progression, ensuring a sustainable and resilient healthcare system for the future.
