Amman, May 18 (Petra) – The Israeli political and security cabinet has decided to immediately resume the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, according to a report by U.S. news outlet Axios on Sunday, citing Israeli officials.

Israel’s public broadcaster reported that the decision was made without a vote, despite opposition from Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and other ministers.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, some ministers involved in the discussions believe the move was prompted by increasing U.S. pressure. The newspaper said the aid will be delivered through various international organizations until a new distribution mechanism is launched on May 24.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that in light of the need to intensify military operations, essential food supplies would be allowed into Gaza to prevent famine.

The statement added that a potential famine could jeopardize the continuation of Operation “Gideon’s Chariots,” aimed at defeating Hamas. Israel said it would act to prevent Hamas from gaining control over the distribution of aid.
