Amman, May 19 (Petra) — As the global community commemorates World Metrology Day on May 20, Jordan is marking the occasion by reaffirming its commitment to precision and standardization, spotlighting advancements in national measurement systems and their role in sustainable development.

This year’s celebration holds particular significance as it coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention, which established the foundation for the International System of Units (SI). The anniversary serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of reliable and unified measurement standards in science, industry, and everyday life.

Director General of the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO), Abeer Al-Zuhair, said in a statement on Monday that metrology has become a cornerstone of global quality infrastructure. She emphasized that World Metrology Day provides an opportunity to underscore the scientific and economic value of accurate measurement in advancing innovation, safety, and trust across sectors.

Al-Zuhair noted that the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), since its establishment, has overcome significant technical challenges in developing stable and universally accepted standards. The shift toward using natural constants as the basis for SI units, she explained, marks a transition into the quantum era, enabling broader and more sophisticated applications in science and industry.

She also pointed to the role of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), founded in 1955, in promoting the integration of metrology into national regulatory frameworks. JSMO, she said, actively adopts global metrology recommendations and translates them into national technical specifications, ensuring Jordan’s alignment with international standards.

The organization is also celebrating over 50 years since its founding, during which it has led efforts to modernize Jordan’s quality infrastructure and enhance its measurement capabilities. Al-Zuhair reaffirmed JSMO’s ongoing role in managing the national metrology system in collaboration with stakeholders from the public and private sectors.

JSMO also participates in regional and international platforms, including the Arab Program for Metrology (ARAMET) and technical committees under the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC). These partnerships, Al-Zuhair said, help Jordan stay at the forefront of developments in global measurement science.
