Amman, May 20 (Petra) – Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard announced on Tuesday that Sweden will advocate within the European Union for sanctions against specific Israeli ministers in response to Israel’s treatment of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

Speaking from Brussels, Stenergard said, “As long as we do not see a clear improvement in the situation of civilians in Gaza, we need to escalate our rhetoric.”

She added, “We will now push for the European Union to impose sanctions on certain Israeli ministers.”
The proposed sanctions would target “ministers who advocate illegal settlement policies and actively oppose a future two-state solution,” Stenergard explained, noting that these individuals will be discussed within the EU framework.

She emphasized that Sweden, in all of its communications with the Israeli government, has called for increased humanitarian access and has strongly criticized the failure to ensure aid delivery.

Stenergard further expressed concern over “how the Israeli government continues to escalate the situation, both in terms of rhetoric and actions.”
