Amman, June 25 (Petra) – Ministry of Government Communication on Wednesday held an educational symposium on “Media and Information Literacy,” attended by a number of public employees from the ministries of finance, local administration, and industry.

Talking at the opening ceremony, the Ministry’s Secretary-General, Dr. Zaid Nawaiseh, said the event is part of a series of activities targeting Jordan’s ministries, government departments, media students at universities and media spokespeople.

The event, he stated, aims to disseminate the principles and skills of media and information literacy, highlighting its importance in protecting society against the dangers of rumors, and disinformation campaigns, as well as providing accurate media narratives.

Noting the “declining” influence of traditional media, he said the rapid emergence of digital media and artificial intelligence technologies have contributed to numerous problems globally as many false narratives emerged.

Locally, he stated the recent tensions in the region have significantly contributed to the spread of a number of false and misleading news items about the Kingdom, aired via video and artificial intelligence technologies.

The government, he said, has developed a “strategic” program for media education for the years 2020-2023, which features executive plans for teaching media education courses.

In this context, he noted the effort targets Jordan’s school and university students, and offers programs for public sector employees and members of society.

Additionally, he stated a national team has been formed by the government, headed by the Minister of Government Communication, in cooperation with the Jordan Media Institute, to implement the new strategic plan for the years 2025-2028, which would address the gaps in the previous phase.
