Zarqa, June 29 (Petra) – Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annab affirmed the ministry’s “commitment” to supporting efforts to document and preserve Jordan’s cultural heritage.

The minister noted digitization today represents a “vital” tool for protecting this heritage and passing it on to future generations.

The minister’s remarks came during her sponsorship of the first annual workshop, themed: “Written Documentation: Traditional Methods and the Digital Horizon.”

The event, which is organized by Queen Rania Faculty of Tourism & Heritage at the Hashemite University and the Center for Documents and Manuscripts (CDM) at the University of Jordan, aims to develop research tools and document and preserve inscriptions in Jordan.

Talking at the opening ceremony, Annab stated artificial intelligence (AI) technologies constitute an “essential” tool for supporting processes of archiving and analyzing inscriptions and building interactive databases that enable researchers to access these treasures “easily and accurately.”

The minister added that AI also contributes to reading damaged texts and reconstructing missing parts, opening new horizons for understanding and preserving Jordan’s history.

To date, she announced more than 60,000 diverse inscriptions have been documented across the Kingdom, making Jordan “an open museum and perhaps the “largest open-air library in the world, embracing human history.”

On futuere plans, she stated Ministry of Tourism is currently working on establishing an inscription museum in southern Safawi district to serve as “a beacon of knowledge that would provide insight into the region’s history and enhance its cultural identity.”
