Amman, June 30 (Petra) – A one-and-a-half-year-old toddler was rushed to a civil defense center in the Balqa Governorate Sunday evening after a stone got lodged in his airway, and swift first-aid was conducted to save his life, Director of the Balqa Civil Defense, Colonel Mohammad Majali, said.

After the foreign object was removed from the child’s throat and his breathing restored at the Zayy and Allan center, he was transferred to Al-Salt Government Hospital for further observation, he said.

Such instance of foreign body aspiration can occur in both children and adults, he said, adding that no human being can tolerate cessation of breathing for over three minutes.

He pointed to lectures and awareness sessions regularly held in associations and schools to raise awareness on how to deal with such incidents and offer guidance, particularly opening the airway in cases of suffocation, whether in adults as a result of eating or in children playing with small objects.

He also said civil defense centers across the Kingdom have raised their readiness with the onset of summer, when incidents of grassfires, snakebites, and drowning rise, with the aim of reducing response time to save lives.
