Amman, July 1 (Petra) – Jordanian Media Credibility Monitor (AKEED) reported 92 rumors circulating among the public during June, aired through local and foreign media outlets as well as social media platforms.

In its monthly report released Tuesday, AKEED stated 18 out of the 92 rumors were officially dismissed, marking a “slight” decrease compared to the 21 fake items debunked in May.

The report noted 36 rumors emerged during the 12-day Iran-Israel conflict , while 18 others were recorded on routine local issues, averaging 1.5 rumors per day. After the conflict ended, rumors returned to local topics, with 30 rumors recorded in just three days, averaging 10 per day.

AKEED indicated that 22 rumors originated from foreign sources, representing 24 percent of the total. Of these, 17 came from Arabic-speaking Hebrew platforms on social media, while the remainder were traced to Western and Arab media outlets.

Security-related rumors ranked highest in June with 33 cases (36 percent), followed by economic rumors with 16 (17%), social rumors with 15 (16%), political rumors 14 (15%), health rumors 8 (9%), and public affairs rumors 6 (7%).

The monitor found internal sources, including social media and news websites, accounted for 70 rumors (76 percent), while external sources accounted for 22 rumors (24 percent).

Regarding dissemination channels, 86 rumors (93 percent) originated on social media, while traditional media outlets were responsible for six rumors (7 percent).

AKEED urged the public to refrain from reposting unverified content from social media, warning relying on user-generated content without fact-checking contributes to spread false and misleading information.

The monitor noted its continued efforts to publish reports on its website to raise awareness about dangers of rumors and their impact on society.
