Amman, July 6 (Petra) – The Council of Ministers decided on Sunday to dissolve municipal councils, governorate councils and the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), effective July 7, 2025.
The decision to discove municipal councils is part of the government’s efforts to reform legislation and regulations related to local administration and municipal governance.
The government initiated dialogue on this matter in early June, conducting successive meetings to discuss recommendations from the Royal Committee for Modernising the Political System on Local Administration.
The discussions will continue in the coming period.
The ongoing meetings focus on legislative proposals aimed at improving municipal and local governance, increasing transparency, strengthening financial and administrative accountability, addressing challenges faced by municipal authorities and promoting good governance principles to enhance public services.
The decision to dissolve the councils is intended to uphold the principles of transparency, integrity and neutrality, especially in preparation for the upcoming elections.
