London, July 15 (Petra) – The BBC reported Tuesday that thousands of Afghans were secretly relocated to the United Kingdom under a covert resettlement scheme launched in the wake of an accidental data leak by a British Ministry of Defence official.
The incident dates back to February 2022, when the personal details of around 19,000 Afghans who had applied for asylum in the UK following the Taliban’s takeover in 2021 were inadvertently exposed.
Despite the breach occurring in early 2022, the British government only discovered the leak in August 2023 after some of the sensitive information appeared on Facebook. Nine months later, a special program was created to resettle those affected, and so far, around 4,500 Afghans have been relocated to the UK under this initiative.
According to the BBC, the British government initially imposed a media gag order to prevent disclosure of the leak or the program. However, a High Court judge has since lifted the restriction, bringing the case into public view for the first time on Tuesday.
