Amman, July 20 (Petra) – The International Meteoritical Society has officially listed a meteorite discovered three years ago in Jordan’s northeastern desert in Mafraq Governorate, according to its latest bulletin.

Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, Jordanian astronomer Emad Mujahid, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the meteorite was discovered in 2022 by local resident Mohammad Shlash, who noticed a rock that stood out from its surroundings.

Laboratory analysis conducted at a specialized Spanish meteoritics lab confirmed that the find was a stony meteorite of the L5 chondrite type.

Mujahid added that anyone can visit the International Meteoritical Society’s website and select “Jordan” from the list of countries to view all registered meteorites found in the Kingdom most notably, the Mafraq meteorite.

He also noted that a lunar meteorite discovered by citizen Moayad Al-Atoom three months ago in Wadi Rum is expected to be included in the Society’s bulletin later this summer and will be officially recognized internationally.
