Amman, July 23 (Petra) — Minister of Interior Mazen Faraya chaired a meeting of the Supreme Council for Traffic Safety Wednesday morning in the attendance of Public Security Directorate Director Major General Obaidallah Maaytah.

Faraya stressed the importance of the council’s meetings to meet its vision and gauge progress in traffic safety based on legislation, procedures and infrastructure.

He urged the council to make positive and practical change in traffic safety and standardize efforts by all parties concerned, leveraging human, logistical, and digital resources. He also stressed partnership and complementarity among the entities.

The council endorsed a plan within the national traffic safety strategy, including 50 projects and 28 programs each with a description card that identifies the required funding source and the implementing bodies and timelines.

It tackled accident black spots and found that 56 locations have been addressed and eight more are currently being dealt with, in addition to financing within the 2026 budget projects of authorities concerned.

The Public Security chief told the meeting that road traffic management is a collaborative effort by all concerned authorities to reduce road accidents, pledging the directorate will provide all expertise and data to ensure the council’s success in its tasks.

The Assistant Public Security Director for Traffic gave a briefing on road safety and technology that showed the results of using Huawei HOLOWITS CCTV AI Camera, Traffic Management System (TMS), and AI-Driven Traffic Management Systems In Smart Cities that employs machine learning algorithms to forecast traffic patterns and identify future concerns.

Public Security studies on the impact of AI smart cameras showed a rise in driver seatbelt use, at 97.4 percent, a drop in traffic deaths in 2024, 1.4 fatalities per day, compared to 1.5 in 2023, as well as a decrease in accidents in 2024, compared to 2023.
