Ajloun Emerges as Top Eco-Tourism Destination

Ajloun, August 6 (Petra) — The northern governorate of Ajloun is experiencing a record-breaking tourism season this summer, driven by heightened domestic and regional demand for nature-focused leisure experiences. The surge has translated into exceptionally high occupancy rates at chalets, hotels, and eco-tourism facilities across the region.

According to Firas Al-Khatatbeh, Director of Tourism in Ajloun, hospitality venues have reported occupancy rates exceeding 90 percent, with booking activity concentrated in chalets, hotels, resorts, and forest rest stops. The demand reflects a broader national trend toward sustainable and rural tourism, particularly during weekends and peak travel periods.

The Directorate of Tourism has deployed inspection teams to ensure that all tourism establishments comply with safety and service standards, as visitor numbers continue to climb. Key natural and cultural landmarks, including the Ajloun Cable Car, Ajloun Castle, Kufranjah Dam, and the scenic valleys of Rajeb, Halawa, and Arjan, have all seen substantial increases in tourist activity.

Al-Khatatbeh noted that Ajloun’s growing appeal lies in its diverse natural landscape, cool summer climate, and well-preserved heritage sites. The governorate, once considered a niche destination, has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone of northern Jordan’s tourism offering.

Adding to the momentum, Nadia Mohammad, a member of the Nasmah Shawq Tourism Association, described the current season as one of the most active in years. She credited the Ajloun Cable Car project, launched in recent months, as a catalyst for the surge, alongside enhanced promotion of sites like the Mar Elias Museum and the Ajloun Forest Reserve. These efforts, she said, have attracted both local tourists and visitors from neighboring countries.

Private-sector operators have also seen the impact. Hamzeh Al-Shwayyat, owner of the Al-Rous Tourist Resort, said the resort is fully booked for several days in advance, particularly on weekends, with reservations now requiring at least a week’s notice. He noted that beyond generating consistent revenue, the resort has also created new employment opportunities for residents of the governorate.
