Amman, Aug 12 (Petra) – Zarqa weather station recorded its highest-ever maximum temperature on Tuesday since records began more than a century ago, reaching 44.8 degrees Celsius, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said.
According to a JMD statement, the new figure broke the previous record of 44.6 degrees Celsius, recorded on Aug. 20, 2010, and Aug. 13, 2023, as documented in the department’s Jordan Climate Bank.
The department said Zarqa has now officially joined the list of stations that have broken their historical records, becoming the first this year to set a new benchmark amid the ongoing heatwave affecting the Kingdom.
With the heatwave persisting, further record-breaking temperatures cannot be ruled out, potentially bringing more historic updates to Jordan’s climate records.
