Hammouri: Jordan Sent Hundreds of Medical Volunteers to Gaza

Amman, Aug. 13 (Petra) – Jordan, a key supporter of Gaza’s health sector, has sent hundreds of volunteer medical personnel to the Strip despite operational challenges and aid restrictions, in line with royal directives to provide treatment to Palestinians and host injured children in the Kingdom’s health facilities, Gaza Health Initiative CEO Fawzi Hammouri said on Wednesday.

In an interview with Petra, Hammouri said more than 400 Jordanian civilian doctors and healthcare workers have provided services inside Gaza alongside Arab and foreign teams, in cooperation with humanitarian organizations, including the Gaza Health Initiative. The Kingdom has sent around 60 medical teams, mostly doctors and nurses, besides Royal Medical Services’ field hospitals in the enclave, he added.

The volunteers included physicians, consultants, specialists, nurses, paramedics, and support staff working in most of Gaza’s hospitals despite severe shortages and dire conditions, he said, adding that many more Jordanians had applied to volunteer under national, Arab and international humanitarian initiatives, but could not join for security reasons imposing by the Israeli occupation authority.

Hammouri said Gaza’s health system is rapidly deteriorating, with some hospitals having closed entirely since March and limited medical aid entering due to the closure of Rafah crossing. However, Jordanian doctors managed to bring in small quantities of medicine and supplies.

He also said a blood donation campaign in Jordan a month ago, which was at Gaza hospitals’ request, saw about 3,000 units collected and delivered to Gaza via the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization. More campaigns will be organized, if needed, in cooperation with the Jordan Medical Association and the Ministry of Health’s blood bank, he added.

Hammouri reaffirmed that Jordan will continue its humanitarian and medical support for the Palestinian people, calling for the urgent access of medical teams and aid to Gaza.
