Bolivia’s Presidential Election Heads for RunoffSucre, 18 Aug (ONA) — Bolivian voters are heading toward an unprecedented runoff in the presidential election, after yesterday’s vote showed centrist candidate Rodrigo Paz leading, though he was unable to secure the outcome outright, according to preliminary results.
Paz will compete in the runoff, scheduled for 19 October, against former right-wing president Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga, who came in second.
With more than 91% of the votes counted, Paz had 32.8%, compared to 26.4% for Quiroga. A candidate needs more than 50% of the vote, or at least 40% with a 10-point lead over his nearest rival, to avoid a runoff.
